OPEN SESSION: Sound Mosaics – playing with the sound archive

Sound Mosaics is an online Sound Forage workshop, using everyday objects to accompany sound clips from the archive at Unlocking Our Sound Heritage’s South East Hub, The Keep (Brighton, UK).
In this series of 3 online workshops, we will draw from a community music toolbox to collectively explore and play with clips from the sound archive. Each workshop will involve different themes, clips and activities and therefore can be taken as a series or as a one-off:
- Sound Mosaics #1, Thurs 29th October 6-7pm (on Zoom)
- Sound Mosaics #2, Thurs 19th November 6-7pm (on Zoom)
- Sound Mosaics #3, Thurs 10th December 6-7pm (on Zoom)
We will delve into themes such as care and the environment, riffing off the digitised clips from the South East Hub collection, which includes local oral history interviews and 1970s BBC Radio Brighton. Within these changing times, we aim to create possibilities for connection through listening and music-making across our different spaces and past, present and future soundscapes.

No previous experience or specific level of ability is required – everyone is welcome.
Donation: please pay what you wish (suggested donation for those with unaffected incomes is £5 plus booking fee).
What is a Sound Forage?
It’s an interesting and absorbing thing to reconsider an object from its sound/s, rather than its looks or function. Pick up an object near you – what sounds does it make? How many sounds can you get from it?
Why Sound Forage?
When we experience our environment through listening, we focus on the here and now. Listening encourages space and pause, invites us to be curious, and requires us to be fully present. When we experience objects through their sounds, new possibilities emerge, especially when we do this together.

We developed our listening walks and sound forage activities in Autumn 2019, when Open Strings Music worked on Sounds To Keep with British Library’s Unlocking Our Sound Heritage’s South East Hub (at The Keep, Brighton, with project lead Esther Gill) and our University of Brighton PhD intern Bethan Prosser. Sounds To Keep was a creative community engagement project to bring the local community to The Keep, to work with newly digitised sounds from the sound archive.
