Silver Strings subsidy scheme 2018 – apply now!

Silver Strings subsidy scheme 2018

Silver Strings is Brighton’s very own later-starter community string band: we’ve been meeting to play cellos, violas and violins together every Tuesday morning since 2013.

We’re a lively and friendly group, who play a mixture of pieces together: familiar songs, folk tunes, and classical themes, as well as creating our own music, playing by ear, and jamming with other groups (such as our young neighbours at the Brighthelm Preschool).

Almost all of our participants were complete beginners when they first came along – some had never even touched a musical instrument before.

The scheme:

We welcome new players, and – thanks to a grant from The Homity Trust – are now able to offer a limited number of subsidised places to people who may not usually be able to afford to attend who want to join us to play violin or viola. We can offer a 50% discount on fees for up to six months (with a minimum of three months’ attendance).

Silver Strings’ fees are payable monthly, so in a four-week month, the 50% discount means that any player on the subsidy scheme will pay £25 at the start of the month. This fee is inclusive of instrument use within the session.

How to apply:

Please contact us to book to come along to a free Open Session at the Brighthelm Community Centre, North Road, on the first Tuesday of the month (NB: 6th March, 10th April, 8th May) where you can try an instrument, meet our players, and join in with the music.

If you wish to apply for the subsidy scheme after this, you will need to email us with the following information, which will be kept confidential:

  • a short paragraph outlining why you wish to access the scheme ie: without the scheme would there be a financial barrier to attending? (NB: we don’t need any specific financial information)
  • an agreement to complete a short survey at the end of the subsidy period, to help with monitoring
  • an agreement to pay your 50% of the monthly fee at the start of each month

Please note: we have a very limited number of places so may not be able to offer every scheme applicant a place.
